Dean wants a job!

I'm looking for a new job, so I'm building this website to show some skills I have.

Here's a direct link to my LinkedIn page.

Position sought

Field: I've always imagined I'd end up working in an office, and I do believe that is where my skills best lie.

Location: Currently living in Dunedin, but open to a change. I’m focusing my search predominantly on Christchurch, but would consider other parts of New Zealand for the right opportunity

Hours: Ideally, I'm looking for a Monday - Friday, 9-5 situation. However, I'm pretty flexible. As long as I don't have to work Sundays, make me an offer and let's talk.

Employment History

December 2023: Pak’n Save Dunedin Bakery Department

Primary Duties

At the time of writing, I have been working as a packer in this department for a little over two years. Packers are responsible for not only packaging items, but also making sure they are correctly labelled and getting them to the shelf. As well as handling food products safely, we also use three primary machines - a hand-wrapper, an auto-wrapper, and a bread slicer. There is also an element of cleaning, and dealing with customers - be it helping with enquiries in-store, or taking custom orders (when available) over the phone. While we do generally work as a team, there are times when individual people will have certain duties. I do generally prefer to work unsupervised, but have no problems working as part of a cohesive and supportive team.

November 2012 - February 2015, August 2015 - Present: Pak’n Save Dunedin Nightfill Department

Primary Duties

Responsible for the sorting and stocking of grocery items. This is done in both a teamwork and solo work setting.

Secondary Duties

I was responsible for the fuel-site, which included doing a daily maintenance check, assisting with any customer enquiries, and shutting the site down at the end of the night. I was also responsible for training people to do any and all of my jobs so that there was adequate cover on my days off.

March 2009 - January 2012: Beven & Robyn O’Callaghan Ltd
February 2005 - March 2009: Sloot Ltd

Since February 2005, I worked as frontline staff at various Mobil petrol stations in Dunedin. In March of 2009, the company was sold to the O’Callaghans.

Education

July - August 2017: AA Motoring Driving School: I completed the New Zealand Defensive Driving Course, and earned my full driver licence in October of that year.

March - July 2015: Hochschule Harz, Wernigerode, Germany I spent a semester studying abroad, which was an exchange programme run through Otago Polytechnic.

2011-2015: Otago Polytechnic I achieved a Level 5 Certificate in IT, and a diploma in Business Management

2009: Quality Service Training I achieved NZQA Unit Standard 167 “Practice Food Safety Methods in a Food Business”.

Skills and Hobbies

I've built this website from scratch using html and my Chromebook's .txt editor. I am somewhat familiar with html from my time doing IT courses at Otago Polytechnic, but I have also been using Google to refresh some of those memories and learn some new skills. While web design is not a passion of mine, I consider a project like this a good way of showing what I can do and that I am willing to learn.
I have also attached two files, a Word Document and an Excel spreadsheet, showing a few of my skills with such software.

I have been part of Dunedin City Baptist Church since 2008, volunteering in a variety of areas. Over my time, I have helped with setup, creche, and data projection. I am on the newsletter team, which has involved learning how to use MailChimp. I have also run activities with the Young Adults' group (such as MCing a quiz night, using a 100-question quiz that I wrote and animated using PowerPoint), and taught a two-night lesson on the book of Jonah, which was very well recieved. For a couple of years, I also ran the carparking ministry, which involved not only guiding people into parks on a Sunday morning, but also organising the roster for this and being in charge of the team. (I found spreadsheets very helpful during this time.)

I am an aspiring writer, and as such, am very familiar with Microsoft Word and Google Docs. I focus mainly on fiction, but I also occasionally write movie reviews, which can be found over on Letterboxd.

For many years, I have been helping my mother in her capacity as Secretary of Marching Otago. I have typed minutes, created graphics using both PowerPoint and Publisher, burnt CDs in Windows Media Player, and helped with emails using Microsoft Outlook. My familiarity with the Microsoft Office suite in general has been invaluable in this.

Summary

I have always imagined myself working in an office environment, and I believe this virtual CV does a good job of explaining what I have to offer. I am computer-literate, and always willing to learn more. In my education, I have been part of several successful group projects, and in some cases, led those groups. I am always punctual, as I believe being late is extremely rude. I am comfortable working to a reasonable deadline, and have done a lot of my professional work unsupervised. When typing, I tend to correct any mistakes as I go, as I find this to be an easier method of ensuring accuracy. I abhor spelling and grammar errors, and take every effort to make sure my own work is free of these.

I am looking for a job where these skills and traits are valued and can be put to good use. I am flexible on working hours and renumeration, and would be willing to discuss these further in an interview.
